Cold Spring is the UK's premier Label / Mailorder store for Industrial, Ritual, Esoteric, Noise, Dark Ambient, Drone.....

Lots of decent dark ambient, martial industrial etc.

I always like dark ambient:

and like Altius I like making up period listings (Roman, Medieval, RCW and 1940).

Film soundtracks like La Reine Margot are very useful and I think it was Doremi who put me onto the Alexander Soundtrack - the Drums of Gaugemelia (sic) is a very evocative track for cavalry charges.

Funny you mention that one, because it's one of my favorites too. Perfect for cavalry actions.
I'm not a bad man but in certain situations I have to ask myself - what would a bad man do?

I don't like it, but I have trouble making out voices over background noise anyway and most of my group have terrible taste in music - heavy metal and worse.

What is very sad is the dick who has a laptop loaded with MP3s for particular moments and spends half the game trying to find the damn things, guess what, he was a Vampire player.

Discovered this site the other day: http://other-atmospheres.ambient-mixer.com/

For ambient soundscapes, so no necessarily background music as such, although music can be part of it, of course. It's web-based, so downloading each of the 8 (I think) sounds for a given soundscape takes a couple of seconds. But then you can tweak them, mute, increase volume of some in relation to others, set how often they occur randomly etc. I haven't actually tried combining my own, but I expect you can? Loads of ready ones already, though.

If a game can't be played to heavy metal, it isn't worth playing :demonic:

I'd be OK with it for wargames where we're all used to the rules and not needing to talk it out.
For RPGs I've never seen it come off without being distracting, silly or... wrong.
One old GM had a GMNPC who became the center of our campaign. She would always end up saving us when things went badly... and in the BIG EPIC finale against our nemesis (her nemesis) every PC ended up unconscious on the floor... but not her. The GM plowed ahead with his choreographed plans, turned on her fucking theme song, and had her take out the bad guy single-handed.
That crap really soured me towards GM playing music during RPGs.

Second that.
I don't dislike metal but I've always wondered how it got to be the go-to music for gamers. Maybe it's the false sense of bravado it gives them, imagining themselves 'hard-core', in the face of all evidence to the contrary.
