Black Lightning / Krypton

Postby Australian Dawn » Fri Mar 22, 2019 3:32 pm

Has anyone watched either of these? Are they any good?

I'm thinking of picking up the first seasons of both on DVD but I'm a bit worried Black Lightning might be a poor copy of Luke Cage, and a story set on Krypton before Superman's birth.... that sounds a bit dodgy to me. Is it even based on a comic book storyline or have they made it up from scratch?

I watched the first couple of episodes of Black Lightning. Looked interesting, but so do a number of shows I haven't taken the time to follow. A binge watch sounds like the best way to do it. I'll wait till I see it at a yard sale.

Critic reviews are mostly positive; user reviews on IMDb mostly negative, but I'd take them with a grain of salt: there seem to be a lot of "black propaganda" comments.

Never even heard of Krypton.

Thanks.
I'll wait for the DVDs to go on sale then.

Always a good idea.

But don't rely on me -- I confess I watched most of "Riverdale" season one, just because I was so amused by the concept of turning "Archie" into "Twin Peaks":

I see a recent episode was even titled "Fire Walk with Me".

Well, that's subjective. :D

Basically "Dark Soap Opera". I didn't find it amusing enough to keep up.

BTW, there must be something about the "Archie" look that's drawn so many parodists over the decades. There was "High School USA":

And of course, the long-running porn comic:

But lots of others. I don't know what it says about society 'n stuff, but there you are.

I found Black Lightning cheap second hand.
It's OK, a bit too close to Luke Cage IMHO, and it's hilarious to see the cops searching for him at a crime scene as he stealthily stands glowing like a neon sign in plain sight on a roof across the road in his ludicrous costume.
I hope they don't try to do crossovers with the other DC TV shows, it has a much grittier style, his costume aside.

Police departments in Super Land are required by law to recruit only idiots. It would, for example, be an interesting exercise to count the number of scenes in which "Gotham"'s Gordon advances into a room, gun to the fore, only to have it knocked out of his hand by someone offscreen.

Glad you found it cheap. I'll see if it shows up at this season's yard sales.

Meanwhile, maybe I'll dig out my old Cherry's. Hey, even this guy did one!
