BBC is making a Victorian-era War of the Worlds

Post your views about what's on the telly-box (not about transvestites, unless it is a programme about transvestism, and even that is borderline unless there are also ladyboys).

Thanks for the update.
You've got to wonder what's going on behind the scenes that keeps pushing it back.

I was really trying to time some War of the Worlds themed games to play with my family to coincide with when we could see this, but it's taken so long I've played the games with other themes!

Oh well, hopefully it'll still be a good watch.

Maybe a straight up retelling of this story is just out of sync with the zeitgeist of the British people since the loss of the Empire? I'm sure the Yanks wouldn't have mucked it up, and they have been drawn to the story again and again, perhaps because it resinates with their position as global superpower, the position Britain held when the story was written.
I suppose the story is all about the hubris of the dominant human power and that narrative isn't particularly relevant to todays Britain.
I thought it was a cert to be good with the BBC behind it, I'll have to reassess my perhaps overly positive opinion of the BBC!

Did any of you guys see it?

Was it much different than the book?

Maybe the Yanks like it because they don't understand it?

Wells was a socialist and anti-imperialist, and the story reflects this.

True. Not understanding it probably just lets it work on a subconscious level. I imagine that's the only way Americans can absorb anything remotely progressive.
Wells was no doubt trying to freak out the imperialists of his day by pointing out that in the scheme of things they might not be all that, who better than Americans to be freaked out by it today?

It does annoy me a bit seeing Wells credited with inventing the concept of time travel though, Edward Page Mitchell wrote about a time machine before him and I wouldn't be surprised if his wasn't the first story to use time travel either, who knows with so many authors works forgotten or lost?
