Probably a smart, if cynical, move.
The last Dr. was a bit of a flop, and the series has been going down hill for some time IMHO, but people will tune in to check out how a woman goes in the role, and she could be the worst actor in TV history and some people will still cheer her on for ideological reasons.
Even if the series crashes and burns the BBC will be able to play the martyr and excuse themselves by blaming any negative feedback on the "controversy" and say they were "pushing boundaries" and it was "ahead of it's time" and turn on the loyal fans and call them close minded, mouth breathing, chauvinists if they dare criticise or don't embrace the next season fully, and the media and a lot of new "fans" only really interested in pushing a political agenda will be delighted to agree.

Funnily enough, I'm not bothered but the wife is up in arms about the choice. But then I generally slept through most of the last series.

More important, I think, is how the new head writer/producer turns out.

Well 'Doctor Who' isn't as gender specific as 'Wonder Woman' is it? What with there being female doctors these days...

Want to have another go? Or would you like to sit in the corner with the TMP Misogynist Club and moan about the good old days when you kept them barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen?

Or the fact that it has been previously clearly established that time lords regenerate as either sex

30 seconds work. Do you ever get tired of being so wrong about everything?

Personally I find comics' obsession with covering every possible variation on a concept or theme to get the IP rights and prevent competition disgusting, and the often lack lustre results hardly seem to be a ringing endorsement of variety for variety's sake in many instances.

I hope for the franchises sake they have a good idea on where they're going with this Dr. Whom* (trademark pending)

*I mean for the W to be pronounced, not silent like it usually is. It's a pun people. A very politically incorrect pun. Yes, apparently I will sink that low for the sake of a bad pun.
