I think it is a really cool model but with a silly face. Even the hat works fine, its just the face is way too big, and a bit "puffy". If you send me the model I will do you a new head!

You could try going to the other extreme and creating a huge carnival mask head instead....

Was searching for the pics and I must say this model ain't THAT bad really...
Looking from this angle...
I remember there was Army od Darkness in one of oldie WD - Nagash was painted black there and wasn't repulsive either...

I think the original model came out in the infamous 'red' period,where almost everything was painted in primary colours, the second pic you put up makes the model look much better.

To me the problem is that the face doesn't look like a skull at all, it's more like skull mask? Howsa bout it you painted it gold instead? Whatever lies under it would be up to the viewer's imagination... my favourite is maggots.

Bronze + greenish oxidation might also work, this combined with natural, dirty tones and lots of chalk...
