Steampunk pirate dwarfs become Demiurg.

Postby Inso » Tue May 09, 2017 2:36 pm

I bought some of the recent GW steampunk pirate dwarfs (Kharadron Overlord Arkanauts) and have decided that they would make good proxies for Demiurg. Luckily, there isn't a lot of information about Demiurg apart from a small sketch and a bit of background about them being traders who shared Ion tech with the Tau.

My plan is to have three Demiurg leading each squad of drones. I haven't decided on what drones to use yet but I have been looking at Beyond the Gates of Antares and there seems to be quite a bit that could be useful.

The three Demiurg in each squad will be a technician (with a Dr Octopus style backpack), a controller (with a control staff and pistol) and an up-armoured leader (with beefier armour and a higher powered weapon/rifle - this will be from the thunderer boxed set). As with everything, I am converting stuff and will be sourcing weapons from wherever I see fit. The heads, I am sculpting.

This is the proof of concept (a controller). Note that the arms are just tacked on to give an idea of size... they will have the weapons replaced before being fitted again properly:

I have a second one on the go and that one will also be a controller. Once I have the five controller heads done, I'll start of the technicians who will have a bit of gubbins on their heads... then the leaders who will have more robust brows and more magnificent facial bristles :) .

Change all that :D !

I have decided to make three Demiurg to start off with; a leader, a controller and a technician. That way I can get them finished and painted to go with some drones that I already have :) . I am still waiting for various bits and bobs to arrive but the Thunderers turned up today so here is where I am at with the first three:

From left to right we have a leader, technician and controller.

I have decided that I can use my Ghar suits as drones for these... which is really handy because I was looking for some troops to go with them so it kills two birds with one stone:

I also plan to have some shield drones for the Demiurg and some targeting/spotting drones as well.

I have been thinking about colours and I reckon it would be interesting to have each unit like a knight and his household with their own colours. That way, I won't have to paint the same colours all the time and also will look nice when painted up... but it's early days yet :) .

Thanks :)

I'm not a pro sculptor... just a practised one... although I sometimes take commissions... and have some of my work in shops... Hmmm :D

The moment I start selling them, does that make me a pro or do I have to sell them for a living?

Either way, if I sculpt what I like, it gets finished. If I don't sculpt what i like, it doesn't... so I'd probably be a proper twat to work with if I was a pro :D!

Hey, if you get payed for it you're a Pro.

And from now on in my comments I'm going to have to hold you to higher, professional standards.

These are still great though. 8)

Now that my components have arrived from Anvil Industries, I have been able to finish the first two Demiurg. The controller is on the left and the technician on the right. The pistols, back-pack and spanner head are all from Anvil. The technician's head is a little more bony than the controllers because he is older :) :

They look great. Full of character and quite a bit more alien and less obviously space-dwarfy than I had anticipated, a good thing IMHO.

Like Worf and The Thing had a bunch of vertically challenged children.
Except, you know, not stupid like that sounds.

They really work, are you basing them on a particular artwork or are they your own design (the heads and faces I mean)?
It would be nice if they had a greater range of facial expression, but other than that the head details are really nice.
They look like Tough, Hard-Headed little Bastards 8)

Top stuff.

The heads are loosely based on a concept sculpt that was floating around some years ago.

The facial expressions will expand a bit as I go... I am effectively setting the benchmark at the moment and will work on expressions once I am happy that the general look of them is OK.

The leader is older still... so his face/head will be a bit further along the bony range. I've also got a really cool Ion weapon for the leader so he should look pretty cool when he is assembled :) .

I am quite enjoying a little bit of a change from the Squat army at the moment :) .
