I was a bit laery of Lord of the Rings - there are great swathes of overwritten sub Beowulfian twaddle in it - you could tell Tom Bombadil and half the crap poetic bollocks to sod off and lose nothing from the story. But it was okay.

But the acres of print in imitation that followed meant either dedicating my life to filtering the few nuggets of average from the irredeemable dross or getting a life of my own.

The need to make a living, defeat the bad guy in the final reel and defend western democracy (prat) means I don't know if I like fantasy really - haven't had the time to find out.

If you tell me there is some good stuff out there I might try.

As for gaming it - I find games based on genres where the good guys always win in the last reel etc., fail miserably as games bacause either they stay true to the original and only one side can win or you fuck up the selling point of the story - the good guys win.

Bit like WWII - its shit if the Nazi twats exterminate everyone and get away with it - oh! Wait. Fuck.

Sounds like the pulpier swords and sorcery stories would be more your style, something like Conan holding off Pictish hordes in some god forsaken borderland for an uncaring distant empire makes for a game without any real good guys who have to win for the world to keep turning anyway.

Of course, if Conan gets it, what then?

Probably not much different than if he didn't get it, he's just one man after all. But if you lose a furry footed midget with a magic ring your armies might as well give up on the spot!

I had no idea who/what Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon was/is.
Still not much wiser and can't be bothered finding out: gosh there's a lot of this fantasy stuff out there isn't there?

The Witcher started off as a series of Polish gritty low fantasy novels, which were adapted into a runaway video game series, and there's a upcoming Netflix adaptation. I admit I haven't read the books nor played the games, and am just regurgitating what I've heard.

Wait, this isn't the game with the infamous sex on a stuffed unicorn scene is it....

Suddenly the reason for Vinni's interest in the game makes sense.

c'mon, if it's as good as you say it is, a girl's allowed to change her bloody shoes? They look practical for, say, going to Pret.

Maybe that explains the sword - she really needs a straight answer whether there are peanuts in the bread.
