Salute + UK tour 2016

Postby manatic » Sat Jul 25, 2015 11:14 am

Cheers fellow frothers,

As I mentioned to some of you at Salute, next year my girlfriend and I are going to go on a month-long tour of the UK and Ireland. As there are plenty of Frothers everywhere, I figured I'd turn to you. We're probably coming to London around Salute, and start off from there. As we're traveling more or less on a student budget, all tips on cheap transportation and lodging are appreciated. Also, if you have a few spare seats in your car after Salute, we'd be happy to pitch in for gas for a trip out of London - wherever you're headed. Same goes for local guide services - we'd love to see things not in tourist guides (not including Steders' shed). Definitely no obligation, though - we're both used to traveling by ourselves :)

We won't have a very strict itinerary, we're basically looking to visit all the countries and have friends and family from Southend to Edinburgh. Historical sights are especially interesting though, so tips for standing stones, castles etc. are most welcome!

Looking forward to seeing plenty of you while there!

In London there are plenty of free museums - British Museum, Imperial War Museum, National Army Museum - and there are plenty of other free museums http://www.timeout.com/london/attractions/top-london-museums. Get a couple of Oystercards to travel around on the tube & buses.

Save some beer tokens for the Fox after/during Salute :)

You'd be more than welcome to pop down to Chatham Dockyard with us after we've packed up for Salute, plenty of naval history, better ask blackfly if my tour guiding of the Dockyard and Rochester Castle was any good.... or Upnor Castle/Fort Amherst if your historical tastes run more Elizabethan/Napoleonic on the day....

Not sure Shit Creek sounds appealing, though...

Seriously, if you can cope with the hounds I'm within spitting distance of the Edgehill battlefield and 10 minutes from Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick castle....

Stockport is......interesting ......but there's always a spare double bed available here as long as I can get my son to stay at his mother's down the road. Divorce is a wonderful thing. Good stopping point for Manchester though with good transport links.

London has enough sites and stuff to keep you going for a month, but if you are going to go somewhere else, then: What Pete said.

Spend a few days in Nottingham.

The cheapest hotel in Greater London is in Croydon: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=easyh ... 7QbQnI7gCA
