tepid is not the word. the movie-going world officially rated it 'a stinker'
I am very fond of the original. I was exposed to it in a 'you will like this, and that's the rules' sort of way, because my drama teachers remembered Tony and Ridley Scott for some reason or other as local lads made good and I remember being impressed but not liking it that much. Later, it was one of the few movies we had on tape, so I watched it to death, and liked it. But a lot of the reason I ike it now is its powerful nostalgia feeling.
The sequel has made good numbers, and is well regarded still. Most SF would love to do that well.
