Which film scares you?

Postby Levied Troop » Tue Oct 25, 2016 11:07 pm

It's coming up to Halloween, so which film scares the crap out of you? It's ok, Im a qualified psychiatrist, you can tell me in total confidence. And I mean, really scares you.

For me it was The Shining. I've barely seen it once (I had my eyes closed for part of the movie), my heart rate was going through the roof and I was not a delighted rabbit. The weird thing is, most of the audience I was in were laughing at it, giggling at Nicholson's OTT performance. I'm not sure I know why it affected me so much, but something about the opening sequence, when it's clear that Jack knows what's coming, the trike ride down the hotel corridors, the twin girls and whatever it was in the bathroom (I had my eyes closed, remember?) really put the willies up me.

Let's do this on the book section as well. Spoiler alert, for me it was.........The Shining.

Alien, I saw it the first time it was on British TV. I think I was 13 or 14. Nearly shit myself.

Quite few films have made me jump - Alien, Aliens, The Thing, Carrie, pretty well any thriller of the last 30 years etc. but in terms of being terrified enough to actually lose sleep over them, only three: The Exorcist, The Blair Witch Project and the Evil Dead (which I saw at the cinema before it was banned).

Fuck me, I can still feel the hairs on the back of my neck rising at the mention of them.

I'm as a rule not ever scared by films, never have been, even as a kid. No idea why, maybe my brain is broken.

Exception: Went to see "Hostel" when it came out, got scared...maybe my neutrons were connected properly for one night.

'Carrie' has the best 'jump' scene of all, the audience when I saw it seemed to have a collective heart attack!

The hand?

...and the vampire kid at the window in Salem's Lot.

In the past,
Wizard of Oz, Salems Lot, Children of the corn (not at the time but a week later it made my toes white),The Shining, Jap Ring/Ring2, That film about the Devil in the lift, film about a thing that came through mirrors/water puddles ( scariest 5 mile walk home in the rain )
I'm sure that if I dug deep enough there would be loads more.

Every now and then a fear will pop up as I'm turning out the lights.

I pity those people who don't get scared, It's as if they listen to an eclectic mix of music without actually having any feelings.
Almost as if they have been given a list of what they should be liking, constantly trying to shock everyone with there "wild taste"
somehow forgetting it's a list that everyone knows about.
I've met a few, all victims of fashion.and twats.

Films don't tend to do much for me.
I have little respect for film. I enjoy films, but I struggle with considering them art. For that reason I have quite a disposable attitude to them and don't take them too seriously. Hence they rarely scare me. The only one that did was Blair Witch Project. I saw it at home, late at night, on my own. It did creep me. That said, the extremely shit ending did undermine the mood that was created during the film. They clearly had no idea how to end it.

I don't get scared of movies like I used to, but The Blair Witch Project was pretty scary.

I also found the original, Japanese version of The Grudge was very disturbing. I had to turn that one off.
I'm not a bad man but in certain situations I have to ask myself - what would a bad man do?
