looks interesting, but he wants a single player (not a multiplayer) as he's an older guy who isn't interested in being shot to pieces by 11 year olds with better reflexes than him...

The three Call of duty Modern Warfare games have a fairly good single player campaign running across the three games, there are also the older ones for WW2. There are also the Far Cry games, the Crysis games, the new Wolfenstein, Dues Ex (original and newer one - fps/rpg), there's the (slightly old now too) Judge Dredd fps (not played it so no idea if it's any good). Most FPS these days are designed to be multiplayer too. There are also the Tom Clancey ones and the Medal of Honour ones too. Oh, and the Bioshock games - certainly the first two. For crazy action and pure FPS, look at the Serious Sam remake(s) in HD - they are good fun.

Any Far Cry game, COD 1 & 2 still stand up and are cheap on Steam, Any of the Stalker games, Half Life 2 is still great fun and has the most memorable moments.

Yes but you are also shot to pieces by older players with worse reflexes!

I found the Far Cry and Stalker games were good for single player FPS because of their sandbox nature, so you can mess around and not just get lead by the nose through missions.
Borderlands is fun, but more mission lead. ARMA3 is great but more simulation, although you can customise it beyond recognition and make it a simple FPS.
