Not sure I would have appreciated Sandman when I was 14, although I did eventually got into it but it was Death: the high cost of Living that finally turned me on to the series

some more recommendations:
the Runaways, One of the best Marvel books of the last decade,
ShockRockets, Arrowsmith, Astrocity, 3 books by Kurt Busiek who might be one of my favourite writers in the business
Scud: The Disposable Assassin, must have been one of my favourite indie books in the 90's
