Now now, the Fairlane was a nice model car, though not a patch on the Aussie Fords of the period...

and then there was:

welcome to Thunderdome! Where even my Cortina was 4.1 litre straight six.. (admittedly the South African Cortina V6 was a smoother ride and turned corners better) - when you compare it to the anaemic UK 1.1, 1.3 and 1.6 versions...

In Brazil DOPS had a good deal going with the local car manufacturers. Ford and others supplied them with lists of union activists, who DOPS happily arrested. In return Ford sold the security apparatus cars at knockdown rates. I believe there was a similar arrangement in Argentina. Fantastic sense of community engagement. You don’t see that today!

No, no it wasn't .. it rusted on the (second) dryest continent on Earth, it had tyres that could have been better replaced by strips of liquorice and it looked like something spawned by a pig and a D10 dozer.

And even With a V8 I could blow past it in a 2 litre 1977 Ford Escort. Never mind what my blower '78 Z28 Camaro did to a few. The cops in the 90's used to use the HPV, which was the police special Holden Pursuit Vehicle in a V8 mode, and it was still a slug. I had to slow down to be pulled over.

The funny thing was the original speedo was in mph, and when it was converted, (I think) only read to 180, and hitting 180km/h was absurdly easy, so the needle would hit the stop once you exceeded 180 km/h - it made for interesting conversations when coppers asked how fast I thought I had been going. The original 3 speed Z28 was only rated to 160 Km/h or 97 mph, so clearly the customisation, super-charger, re-bore, altered profile cam etc and engine mods on the Chevy 5.7 litre had helped a bit.

And what is scary is that my stock 4 ltr 2006 BF Futura was rated to 221 Km/H or 137 mph. (When the speed limiter was disabled). Overchipped it could go quite a bit faster. The missus had an ex police BF Falcon out of Canberra that was truly scary. The V8 models were only marginally faster and didn't handle as well. They were only really better at acceleration from standing.

My TE 4 litre Cortina was rated to 197 Km/h. But I reckon, flat to the floor was 189. The 2 litre version was 158 flat out.

Nah, the Austin Maxi. A true connasewer's car.

I still wake up every morning grateful that I ditched the thing over 40 years ago :)
