TBH Id say D&D (redbox or 5th ed) would be a great place to start - the 5th ed starter set has everything you need for a one shot.
I am also a RQ6 or BRP guy, its a good system, but a little technical (only at 1st)...
I indoctrinated my group using mini games (we used BASH! fantasy) then into D&D - which proved v popular, I am only now considering staring them on BRP (it could have been where we started If Id been more confident of a more open system)
