Vampire: The Masquerade is really cool if you find time to learn it. Hands down my favourite

Go with 5th, it really is the best one yet. We came to it after playing 2nd and it is much smother.

Savage worlds, simple system and the basic book that gives you everything you need is less than £10.

TBH Id say D&D (redbox or 5th ed) would be a great place to start - the 5th ed starter set has everything you need for a one shot.

I am also a RQ6 or BRP guy, its a good system, but a little technical (only at 1st)...

I indoctrinated my group using mini games (we used BASH! fantasy) then into D&D - which proved v popular, I am only now considering staring them on BRP (it could have been where we started If Id been more confident of a more open system)

Otherworld? I haven't played this, but the description suggests a simpler set of rules that might be suitable for the age range you're looking at.

The D&D Dragon Quest set is always a decent starter. You should be able to pick one up cheaply, and if you're lucky it might still have its original set of metal Ral Partha miniatures that came free with it. It does have the basic plastic ones if it doesn't, though.
