I saw this on DVD and was not impressed, a lot of things happened off camera or in the background for no reason I can think of but to save on CGI, it was so bad it was like a radio drama in some places, and not in an Orson Welles kind of way, but in a you have to listen to the characters and use your imagination to know what's happening supposedly right in front of you kind of way.
Did we ever even see the Martians come out of the meteorite things? Actually see it? the meteorite things spun, they lit things on fire, they stuck to your hand, they were shown doing almost everything but have Martians come out of them! If people weren't already aware of how the story went I really think they'd have had trouble following it.
The Authorities were show as such stereotyped jingoistic numbskulls that all suspense was sucked out of the scenes where they did anything, you knew they had no chance of success when the film portrays them like that.
And George and Amy were the least sympathetic protagonists I've seen in a very long time, only thinking of each other and selfish to the core, I couldn't believe how annoying they were, both the Jingoistic morons and Martian bloodsuckers looked sympathetic by comparison!
The Book deserves better, I expected more from the BBC.
