My dear old Mad Mum bought me enormous numbers of books. She never read them or knew what was in them, if it was in the SF section or looked a bit futurey she got me it. To this I owe the dubious pleasures of getting 'The Fog' when I was about 8. (Also my brother's Hot girlfriend got me 'Planet Story' when I was 11. Lord, that fuelled a few fevered dreams involving her and a Nuclear Steam Train, I can tell you).
Mum bought me a Gor Book for my birthday and Christmas every year, I had a dozen of them. When you are a kid they are ace. I found one in a second hand shop recently* and god, it's awful stuff.
* things I almost never see in second hand shops - Sven Hassel, Conan, Gor, Ann Rice's pervy stuff under a pseudonym, the early James Herbert with the obligatory sex-scenes - I suspect the sort of people that buy these sort of books keep and treasure them for ever..... Brrrrr
