Amateur sculptors shouldn't be putting out stuff for sale. It blemishes the hobby in se and it's ridiculous.
I suppose I take the mirror image of this view. Most people don?t care so much about how technically sophisticated a figure is as how it strikes their imagination. A work strikes a person as good if it shows them just a bit more than they understand, too little and it?s boring, too much and they can?t see it or it confuses them. This is true I think of all art. Since most people don?t do a lot of thinking about art and many that do fill their heads with gibberish it stands to reason the art most people like isn't very sophisticated. This doesn?t mean crude, the very best art is accessible on several levels and pleases everyone. You just have to understand the reward of excellence is not generally public appreciation and that the better you get the fewer will appreciate it fully. This is natural and being disappointed or contemptuous is like railing against the weather or not accepting you will grow old and die. It?s not going to make any difference except to make you bitter. Enjoy your vision and skill if you have it and don?t expect anyone else to because they probably won?t. Then when they do it?s a gift.
