Vril energy came from a British novel, The Coming Race, and had a fan following in esoteric societies everywhere in the late 19th century. Of course, everyone misses that the book was a satire of Victorian society with an inversion of the genders. Everyone just keeps it at super-electricity created by a superior underground race.

Have you read it by any chance? I've always wondered if it was any good, I suppose it was the Star Wars of it's day, spawning mysticism in the same way The Force inspires people to declare themselves Jedi on surveys today.

Yes, and it's so-so. The protagonist is one of those passive types that only serve to be explained every facet of the utopic society.

Von Harbou did become a Nazi. Just saying. IIRC she had ambitions to be Mrs. Adolf Hitler, something she shared with Siegfried Wagner's widow, which, considering he mocked the Nazis in one of his last operas, helps explain why his work remains relatively unknown.

Ahem -- back on topic, this appears to be a kind of overview of the Perryverse:

With 3000 book(lets) published, another attempt at translation into English seems a tall order.

Mad Max barely counts as sci-fi these days and I'm not sure diehard Mad Max fans really count as geeks so much as scary rev-heads, not that I've seen any anywhere but on Youtube. And I suspect film buffs will be singing Metropolis' praise long after Mad Max is forgotten, if we have to invade New Zealand to get that sort of Sci-fi cred so be it I say.

Not necessarily  but I might think having to put up with Mad Max and NOT invading all your neighbours a fair trade for Metropolis.
